Chelseagrin - Signing Off!

For almost two years, we've provided a place for Heath and Joker fans to find art, news and an…unusual style of blogging - first in anticipation of TDK and then sadly, as a means to remember a great and promising actor.

It's not easy to say goodbye to something that you have invested emotionally in. However, with the awards season over and with the purpose of the site fulfilled, we all feel proud of what we've accomplished, and our hope is that you've enjoyed the ride, too.

While Chelseagrin will no longer be actively updated, we do intend to keep the site up and running. Chelseagrin will remain online, in archived-mode, so that people can visit and rediscover (or discover) Ruth's art, our blogs, or the two years worth of articles about the movie and Heath.

In doing Chelseagrin, we've had the opportunity to meet a lot of amazing people, and have some of the best experiences of our lives. We'd like to thank all the people who have made this something special, too many to name, but nonetheless, we're grateful for the e-mails of support, the friends we've made along the way, and the kindness both the actors and crew afforded some very enthusiastic girls.

We've never been shy about our love of Heath, nor our love of the creative process. As we move forward as a collective group, we have many projects in the works. We hope that you'll support us in our own ventures, as much as you've supported Chelseagrin, Heath and TDK!

The Chelseagrin girls have formed OnceBanned - an artist collective aimed at helping creative-types present their stories on the web. Our goal is to bridge the gap between fan and creator, between pages in a book and pages on the web. We're currently looking to work with people who are working on graphic novels, books or films and want to collaborate. Our website will go live the first week in June. In the meantime, feel free to drop us a line at info@oncebanned.com

OnceBanned is currently working on the following projects:

Kumari and Ruth are working on an amazing graphic novel called The Festival Season:

Harlan Quinn is a wealthy libertine; a doctor and scientist. Helping and healing are just unfortunate by-products of Harlan's work. His true purpose as a physician is to see the grotesque and secret world of the human body that his society tries to hide. Harlan has no use for the economic segregation of Victorian London and spends his nights slumming on the East End. His fascination with the complex social systems of London's underclass bring him to a man who claims to have survived an attack by Jack the Ripper.

Harlan brings the man home as his patient. In an effort to draw out the mysterious guest, Harlan's servants buy a marionette to entertain him. The puppet proves to be a wise investment. The patient begins to regain his strength and identity, although he is not welcomed by all of the house's residents. Harlan's favored servant (and sometimes lover) Ruby suspects that the guest is a plague.

What is London without a plague or two? As if Jack the Ripper was not enough.

Harlan and his patient forge a bond that knows no limits. Oh, and some murders happen. Not those murders, these are different ones.

Or are they?

Check out their blog, and look for them at a Comicon near you!

We're also starting up a new site, affectionately called STFU, Superman! Part irony, a heavy dash of parody and a bit of truth, STFU strives to expose the dark underbelly (and gossip!) of the superhero, sci-fi and comic book worlds. After all, who says superheroes never have bad days? In the next few weeks, we'll be adding some opportunities for visitor interaction as well, so keep us bookmarked!

It's hard to find the right 'last words' to go out on, so I give the floor to Ruth, and her eloquent words:

May 2009

The film has run its entire course now. Heath accomplished what we had hoped he would---Exceeded Expectations, as they say on the yearly reviews at work. The whole story has a very surreal quality to it; it wasn't enough for his fans to tell the world how much he'd be missed: Heath himself had to show it, personally, and that he did, with a big exclamation point. Academy Award winner Heath Ledger---it sounds pretty right, doesn't it? There's *one* thing no one will ever be able to take away from him.

As far as this site is concerned, though, something still felt not right. Because we hadn't yet said our goodbyes. So I guess this is it.

There's a lot on the road ahead for me, a lot to be excited about but this, this thing was pretty darned special. Heaths don't happen along every day; they just don't. I wish I could thank him for showing me how to be more fearless, and how to have the confidence in my own abilities that I didn't have before. Maybe those qualities were there all along and they might have emerged by themselves anyway.

And maybe not.

Cut, and that's a wrap. Well done, my friend.

We're always about the collaboration here - so check out this great fan-inspired film from Chris Frahme - he took our comic and used it as the basis for a short! Thanks to Chris for sharing this with us!

Heath's 'gentle way'

A really great article from 'The Envelope', the awards season blog from The L.A. Times, full of fond remebrances from friends and co-workers. What's great about this article is that everyone seems to agree - Heath was wise beyond his years and infinitely curious about the world. His energy seem to spread, positively affecting everyone who came in contact with him.

Catherine Hardwicke, who directed Heath in Lords of Dogtown, remembered Heath's style and his "Fagin' tendencies:

"The younger actors, he was kind of like the godfather to all these boys, the Fagin," Hardwicke said. "He would encourage them, take them under his wing. He had half a trailer, he was so modest but he set up a camp outside it. He set up tiki torches and people would play guitars and call it Camp Heath."

Jason Issacs, his "Patriot" co-star, said it best:

"I'll tell you an odd thing that happened," he added. "He died and everybody who had known him and worked with him on 'The Patriot,' we all phoned each other. Not like everybody didn't know; it was all over the headlines. None of us had anything particularly interesting or profound to say; we just wanted to say his name out loud. And be sad together. Because he was a lovely person."

Heath takes home the BAFTA!

Charles Roven, one of TDK's producers, accepted on Heath's behalf. Roven had the chance to work with Heath twice, and as with so many Heath touched, it was obvious that Roven was shaken by the loss of Heath as a person, as well as an actor.

Heath picks up another win for his role at The Joker!

Congraulations again to Heath! His SAG award was accepted by a very emotional Gary Oldman (another CG favorite!), as the crowd of actors and industry stood to recognize Heath's achievements.

Gary, clearly emotional, tears in his eyes, said: On behalf of Heath, his family and his family on The Dark Knight, I thank you.

Thanks again to the cast of TDK, for stepping up and honoring Heath. We imagine that this awards season must be hard for them, just as it is for us. Congrats Heath, we're so proud to see your work recognized!

Heath gets his Nom Nom Nom!

So, part of CG was up and lounging by the pool when Oscar nominations were announced this morning. All we have to say is: Damn right! Heath's nomination was the only non-technical nom for The Dark Knight, and while we are very sad to see that Nolan was snubbed (Come on, he was nominated for a DGA award, AMPAS!), we are so proud to see the Academy recognize Heath's work.

Now the interesting part starts - we'll inevitably be waiting to see what odds are placed on his win. We think he has a good shot at becoming the second posthumous Oscar winner in the history of the awards. And while it's sad to have to say that, it is testament to his talent and his love of this role. Thanks, Heath. We know you probably would have been embarrassed by all this, but we're glad to see your peers recognize you once again.

Heath Wins the Golden Globe!

Congrats to Heath on his Golden Globe win! Heavily favored to bring home the statue, we are so proud to see his work recognized. Chris Nolan accepted on Heath's behalf and in a speech choked with emotion said:

After Heath passed on, you saw a hole ripped in the future of cinema — but with the extraordinary response to his work that we've seen all over the world, I, for one, start to be able to look a bit less at that gap in the future and a little bit more at the incredible place in the history of cinema that he built for himself with his talent and with his dedication to his artistry. For any of us lucky enough to work with him, I think for any of us lucky enough to have enjoyed his performances, he will be eternally missed. But he will never be forgotten."

As always, we thank Chris Nolan for his words - he's always a class act and it's obvious how much he valued Heath as an actor and friend.
